BEADING, HANGING
c. 1970 - 1979This Toran is a good example of the moti technique of beading from the Saurashtra region of Gujarat, India. This traditional tribal shape is used to frame the top of a doorway or a shelf in the home.
The Toran is composed of Indian glass beads with symbolic motifs of Ganesh, elephants, horses, cows, trees and flora. The background is of white beads with the motifs of coloured beads in blue, red yellow and green and has a border of coloured beads around all edges. The backing is of a heavy red cotton wth a bias edging and loops for attaching the hanging to the door frame.
