WWI souvenir sweetheart brooch - Ypres

Overview

Two-toned metal souvenir brooch from the town of Ypres in Belgium.
The brooch comprises the Coats of Arms of the French Royal family (three fleur-de-lis topped by a crown) and Ypres (Cross of Lorraine above the Cross of Bailleul), separated by the British Royal Coat of Arms. A scroll at the bottom contains the word 'YPRES'.
The background of the brooch is silver in colour while there are gold coloured highlights including details on the coats of arms and the word 'Ypres'.
There is a pin clasp on the reverse.

Historical information

This brooch is typical of sweetheart jewellery sent home by Australian servicemen on the Western Front during the First World War.
