WWI souvenir metal matchbox cover - Ypres
c. 1927WWI era brass and niello souvenir matchbox cover and matchbox. The cover features two scenes commemorating the Battle of Ypres - Menin Gate Memorial and Hill 60 - on either side and has the words 'Souvenir d'Ypres' (Souvenir of Ypres) written on the spine
The matchbox inside is from the USSR.
Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing is a war memorial in Ypres, Belgium, dedicated to the British and Commonwealth soldiers who were killed in the Ypres Salient of World War I and whose graves are unknown. It isis located at the eastern exit of the town and marks the starting point for one of the main roads that led Allied soldiers to the front line.
It was built by the Imperial War Graves Commission 9now Commonewealth War Graves Commission) and unveiled on 24 July 1927.
