Overview

Colourful fundraising button featuring the portrait of General John Joseph Pershing, the commander of the American Expeditionary Forces in Europe during World War One.
It is made from printed paper between a tin base and celluloid cover.
He is wearing his high collared uniform, medal ribbon bar and a peaked cap. The background is white but there are quite a few age spots. His name is written in black block letters on either side of his portrait.
The whole button is enclosed within a solid gilt frame with an attached brooch pin.
There is no visible maker's mark.

Historical information

John Joseph Pershing (born 13 September 1860, died 15 July 1948) was an American army general, educator, and founder of Pershing Rifles. He served as the Commander of the American Expeditionary Forces during World War One from 1917 to 1920.
