Overview

Colourful fundraising button featuring the portrait of General Edmund Allenby, the commander of the British military forces that conquered Palestine and Jerusalem in World War One.
It is made from printed paper between a tin base and celluloid cover.
He is wearing his uniform with red collar tabs designating his rank, a Sam Browne belt and a pith helmet. The background is in pale brown earthy colours. His name is written in dark brown block letters on either side of his portrait.
The whole button is enclosed within a solid gilt frame with an attached brooch pin.
There is no visible maker's mark.

Historical information

Edmund Henry Hynman Allenby, 1st Viscount Allenby (born April 23 1861, died May 14 1936) was a senior British Officer and Imperial Governor. He was the last great British leader of mounted cavalry, who led the Egyptian Expeditionary Force to victory in Palestine and Syria in 1917 and 1918.
