WWI trench art copper slouch hat with rising sun badge
c. 1918Hand made trench art copper slouch hat in the style of that worn by members of the Australian Imperial Force during World War One.
The phrase '14 - FRANCE - 18' is engraved around the top of the hat brim with each number and letter being made up of a series of parallel fine lines.
One side of the brim is turned up and features an attached depiction of the Rising Sun badge in miniature. Any writing on the badge has been lost due to polishing, but the King's Crown and scrollwork are still visible. Remnants of the polishing fluid remain around the rising sun badge.
The crown of the hat has a furrow or crease extending from front to back.
This copper slouch hat was presumably made by an Australian soldier who served in France during World War One.
It was purchased from the United Kingdom. The seller suggested that the groove in the top of the hat may have been used to support a pen.
