1921 New Zealand silver fern sweetheart brooch
19211921 dated New Zealand silver fern sweetheart brooch made from metal with blue enamel detailing.
The stalk of the fern frond is infilled with blue enamel and has the date '1921' embedded within. The letters 'NZ' are also in blue enamel bordered with metal and are located in the centre of the fern frond.
The reverse has a lapel pin featuring a crescent moon design for attachment. The maker's details 'FATTORINI & SONS BRADFORD' are impressed on the reverse.
In 1921, New Zealand observed its first official national Anzac Day as a full-day public holiday on April 25.
Following lobbying by the Returned Soldiers' Association (RSA), Parliament passed legislation in 1920 making the day a legally recognized holiday to honour service members and mourn the casualties of World War One.
Hotels and banks were closed, and race meetings prohibited
It is likely that this brooch was sold as a souvenir to commemorate the day and support the welfare of returned servicemen and women.
