WWI era NZ silver fern sweetheart pin with 'cat' motif
World War One era New Zealand silver fern sweetheart pin featuring a 'cat' motif and the letters 'NZ' in the centre.
It is made from brass and depicts a horizontal unfurled fern frond with the stalk on the left.
It is held on a vertical metal pin which is soldered to the reverse. There are no maker's marks.
The silver fern frond represents the national emblem of New Zealand and was a primary motif for the New Zealand Expeditionary Force (N.Z.E.F.) during World War One. Another traditional motif would be the kiwi. However, having a cat on a New Zealand pin is unusual. It perhaps depicts a black cat - a common good luck charm during wartime - or represents a specific wartime mascot.
'Snowy' the white cat was the official mascot of the New Zealand Tunnelling Company during World War One, providing companionship and morale boosts to the men. She lived with the troops at their Base Depot in Dainville, near Arras, France.
This sweetheart pin is one of many produced and sold to servicemen to give to their loved ones during wartime.
This pin is one of several silver fern brooches and pins in the collection.
