WWI era NZ silver fern sweetheart brooch with name plate
World War One era New Zealand silver fern sweetheart brooch featuring a central rectangular rose gold name plate. It is made from silver coloured metal and depicts a horizontal unfurled fern frond with the stalk on the left.
The central name plate has not been engraved with the name of the donor or recipient.
The reverse is fitted with a brooch-pin for attachment. There are no maker's marks.
The silver fern frond represents the national emblem of New Zealand and was a primary motif for the New Zealand Expeditionary Force (N.Z.E.F.) during World War One.
This sweetheart brooch is one of many produced and sold to servicemen to give to their loved ones during wartime.
The rectangular plate positioned across the front stalk was intended to be custom engraved with either the soldier's details (initials, name, service number), or the recipient's name. However, this has remained blank.
This brooch is one of several silver fern brooches and pins in the collection.
