WHITEWORK,HANDKERCHIEF

Overview

These two whitework handkerchiefs, most likely made in Asia by different people at different times, emulate the fine whitework embroidery of Appenzell, Switzerland with characteristic fine satin stitch, ladder stitch drawn thread lines, small 5 petalled flower, seed stitch in leaves and very fine buttonhole edgings,
They provide an interesting comparison with the European Appenzell handkerchief #2008.049 showing how Asian countries copied European embroidery and where standards gradually diminished with emerging competition from machines and greater demand for mass overseas markets.
In (a) there is more embroidery and of a better standard than (b).
