Overview

Baby carriers have been used by many generations in this region of China as the preferred method of carrying their babies. Baby carriers were usually made by mothers for their daughters at the time of their wedding, ensuring tht they have a 'trouseau' for their married life. Designs change over the years, as do the threads used and the colour preferences of the younger generation.
An unused (new) baby carrier which is very typical of the style of baby carrier being used by young women in the region at this time. This design and style is considered by young mothers to be the one to have regardless of ethnic minority. It has a bright background and is covered in bullion stitch flowers, and this style was seen being made in the Ting Dong Market at time of purchase. The colours of burgundy and purple were very typical and popular at this time.
Young women were seen quietly stitching their baby carriers in spare time, maybe while also looking after a small shop or stall, between rice field working seasons.
