LACE, BOBBIN, HONITON, EDGING

c. 1880 - 1889
Overview

A wide edging of the finest Honiton lace, rarely found today, 21st century.
The band consists of 3 different motifs, alternating sequence 4 times – consisting of flowers, leaves, scrolls and lattice work. The top edge is straight and the other edge scalloped.

It is interesting that the motifs do not follow in sequence every time.
Honiton motifs were made in the home, collected by the Middleman, & taken to be joined into lace accessories by another person.

It is possible to see the very fine joins.
The lace would have been gathered and used as a frill, as evidenced by a running thread on the footside.
