WEAVING, OBI

c. 1930 - 1939
Overview

There are many types of obi for women, with certain types of obi worn only with certain types of kimono to certain occasions. Often, the obi can adjust the formality of the entire kimono outfit, with the same kimono being worn to occasions of differing formality depending on the obi worn with it. This is a Nagoya Obi – wide at one end is sewn in half where the knot of the fold in the obi would begin. It is one of the most common forms of obi and are usually quite formal, although this is often indicted by the quality of the fabric.
This obi is beautifully woven featuring soft chrysanthemums in foliage. It is a heavy weight silk indicating the formality of the garment, and may have been woven as early as the 1930’s. This would have been passed down the generations
