Silver plated trident bread fork with decorative top - emu
c. 1914One of a set of three EPNS silver plated trident bread forks featuring Australian native fauna.
This fork has a circular voided top with a central image of a standing emu, below which is a solid sphere and then a long thin shaft. The shaft continues to a point, either side of which is a curved tine of the same diameter, also ending in points.
The cast emu is detailed, with feathers and leg texture visible. It is three dimensional from the front but has a flat back.
The maker's mark and other hallmarks appear on the lower front shaft, while on the reverse are the words 'Made in Australia'.
Although there is no date on this fork, it was purchased with two others featuring a kangaroo, one of which has the date 1914 engraved on it. As well as the emu and kangaroo, similar patriotic forks were produced featuring other birds and animals.
