George Dickinson's 1936 baseball glove
A 1936 baseball glove belonging to Western Australian baseballer George Dickinson. The original light tan leather has been darkened to almost black in the palm of the glove. The lining inside the glove is black in colour. The wrist strap on the back of the glove has a metal stud button for closure, and the manufacturer's label is stitched onto the strap. G. Dickinson has been scratched into the strap.
This glove dates from the earliest years of George Dickinson's baseball career. He was one of the best pitchers in Australia during his era. As most players did during the early days, George played many different positions and was a damaging player at the plate and in the field as well as on the mound.
He served his local club Perth well throughout his career, helping the side to successive premierships in 1949 and 1950. He was also awarded life membership of the club for his contributions both on and off the field.
Dickinson recorded an earned run average of 0.82 over an eight-year period where he earned a 38-14 win-loss record in the WA State League. On average, he would strike out 8.5 batters for every nine innings pitched and would rarely give up a walk.
As well as playing in the Western Australian League, George represented the State in 11 interstate championships and was selected All-Australian four times: Claxton Shield Team Member 1936-1939, 1946-1952; Claxton Shield Outstanding Player 1950; Team Australia Member 1947,1948, 1950, 1952; Team Australia Captain 1947.

George Dickinson's baseball career spanned nearly 30 years (1936-1955). In 2005 he was inducted into the Australian Baseball Hall of Fame and in 2021 he was an inaugural inductee in the Baseball WA Hall of Fame.
The glove was donated to the Baseball WA Museum & Archives by the Dickinson family.
This baseball glove is a rare example of the type of glove used when the sport was in its infancy in Western Australia. It belonged to one of Western Australia's greatest baseball players in George Dickinson. For both these reasons it holds great social and historic significance for Baseball WA.
