Dave Mickle's Catcher's Glove

Overview

Leather catcher’s glove with leather binding stitches. Faded brown, very worn with distinctive ball indent. Rear finger inserts with metal wrist buckle.

Historical information

This glove belonged to Mr Dave Mickle, who was one of the founding members of the Victoria Park Baseball Club when baseball was in its infancy in WA in 1936. He served as the inaugural Club President, and was also appointed Association Delegate and Practice Captain. He continued to hold administration positions with the Club, namely Vice President and Committee member for a number of years. As a player he served as Captain for a number of years. He usually played in the Catcher’s position but also pitched. He played for the Club for eight years. During that time he was selected in the WA State team over a number of years and played in numerous Claxton Shield Championships. In 1948 he was a non-playing captain for Victoria Park. In 1955 he played in the Night Baseball Competition.

Contextual Information

This is a significant item to the collection as it dates from 1936 when baseball in Western Australia was in its infancy. It was owned and used by a key player of the sport who served his Club and his State with honour both as a player and an Administrator. Dave Mickle was a founding member of the Victoria Park Baseball Club, which is the only Club still in existence that was formed when baseball first started in WA.
The glove was donated to the Baseball WA Museum & Archives by the family of Wally Nightingale, a teammate of Dave Mickle
