1978 Western Australian State baseball team necktie
1978This necktie is made of black polyester fabric. Embroidered in gold-coloured thread, is a stylised swan above the word 'Baseball'.
The Claxton Shield is the name of the premier baseball competition in Australia, held between State-based teams, as well as the name of the trophy awarded to the champion team.
This tie was worn by Tony Goadby as part of the official walk-out uniform of the 1978 Western Australian State baseball team, when they competed in the 39th Claxton Shield Baseball Championships. The tournament was held at Perry Park in Brisbane, Queensland.
Other Australian states competing for the Claxton Shield trophy were New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia. Western Australia won the series for the second consecutive year, beating South Australia 4-1.

In 1978 Tony Goadby was competing in his first Claxton Shield Series as a Western Australian representative. Playing as an outfielder, Tony went on to represent Western Australia in seven more Claxton Shield championships (1979‒1983, 1985‒1986). Tony donated the tie to the Baseball WA Museum & Archives.
This tie has social and historic significance as it belonged to a Western Australian who achieved excellence in the sport of baseball for his State. It represents the 4th Claxton Shield win for Western Australia. The tie has impeccable provenance and is in good condition.
