1811An excellent example of a map sampler, part of a young girl’s education in 19th century.
Stitched on off white silk with linen backing. On the top right hand corner is the school crest, name of school, 'Box Hill' and 'Stitched by N. Neate in 1811'.
Map of England and Wales along with borders and names of English counties and borders or surrounding countries, Scotland, Ireland, France and seas - St Georges Channel, Bristol Channel, British Channel,
Irish Sea, German Ocean. Names stitched in black in upper case and borders outlined with 3 rows of straight stitch and split stitch in off white, ecru and black.
The sampler had been framed, black tape on edges with a narrow gold border.
Sections of the silk are disintegrating on right hand side and foxing all over the sampler..
