c. 1960 - 1969Fine example of Chinese needlepainting in black and white, reminiscent of Chinese ink etchings.
Needlepainting of a black and white galloping horse with Chinese calligraphy in black silk floss on upper right hand corner. Maker’s/artist’s stamp in red thread in middle of calligraphy.
The Chinese writing is Taiwanese, a message from a local person Mr Lee Chung-Shing , written to his brother Shi-Jie who is studying Chinese literature and history in Taiwan. It is a gift for his graduation,
as Shi -Jie has finished studying successfully and is about to go back to his home town.
During Han Dynasty, horses symbolised power and wealth of the aristocracy.
Embroidery was considered the finest art form.
