GENERAL EMBROIDERY, CAP

Overview

A rarely seen Scottish Gentleman’s embroidered smoking cap. Became unfashionable by c. 1920. The black silk cap lined with quilted silk is decorated with chenille couching into leaf and flower motifs to the sides with three motifs on top. Generic leaf and sprigs are random. There are places where pattern markings are visible.

Social: Seen as ‘rank badge’. Worn by ‘gentry’ not working class.
Provenance: A photo taken at Ashton Hall, Brisbane, c. 1907 shows Thomas Grice wearing the cap. Thomas was the father the Donor's ancestor Elizabeth Price.
