OSBORNE HOTEL
c. 1898Sepia print mounted on grey card of the Osborne Hotel. Behind lawn and white fences is an ornate Victorian Italianate building with a Flemish gable and balconies with balusters. Above the entry is a tower, its two iron railed balconies supported by decorative brackets and the upper floor formed by a corrugated iron mansard roof with iron cresting and flag pole flying the Australian flag. To the left is the simpler bar and billiards' room buliding. The area near the main entrance, the terraces and balconies are crowded with people. At the lower edge is [OSBORNE] and on the mount [Greenham & Evans. PERTH, W.A.].
1894 James Grave began building Perth's finest resort hotel. Extensive hotel was surmounted by a tower with a 70 ft turret and surrounded by landscaped gardens with fountains flowers, retreats, shades and summer houses. There was also a tennis court, bowling green, boat shed, swmming baths, with a flight of 200 steps to the water's edge to cater for those arriving by boat. The hotel and the street were named after Matilda Osborne (wife of the late William Osborne d.11.5.1893) who financed the purchase of the land and the construction of the Hotel in 1894. Purchased by Loreto Sisters for Loreto Convent School 1901. Demolished 1962.
