Osborne Hotel

Overview

Osborne Hotel viewed from driveway off Perth-Fremantle Road. Behind white fences, hedges, shrubbery and fountains is an ornate single storey Victorian Italianate building with arched entry, flanked by Flemish gables and topped with a full width balcony with balusters. Above the entry is a tower, its two iron railed balconies supported by decorative brackets and the upper floor formed by a corrugated iron mansard roof with iron cresting and flag pole. To the left of the main building is a creeper covered gazebo/bandstand obscuring a further building with skylight.

Historical information

Possibly taken at time of sale of hotel to Loreto Convent, 1900. In 1894 James Grave began building Perth's finest resort hotel. Extensive hotel was surmounted by a tower with a 70 ft turret and surrounded by landscaped gardens with fountains flowers, retreats, shades and summer houses. There was also a tennis court, bowling green, boatshed, swmming baths, with a flight of steps to the water's edge to cater for those arriving by boat. Purchased by Loreto Sisters for Loreto Convent School 1901. Demolished 1962.
