Historical information

The steam ships Water Lily and Manx Fairy were vessels owned and operated by West Australian Steam Packet and Transport Company.

The Water Lily was a twin screw steamer, 90 feet in length, 15 feet in breadth, and 7 feet deep and built by T. and S. Leith of Rutherglen Scotland.

The vessel arrived from England in November 1896 after having left Liverpool in March. Prior to arriving in Australia the Water Lily was employed in the Bristol Channel trade and had proved to be a good sea boat.

Two pairs of direct acting vertical inverted cylinders of 8-inch diameter and 12-inch stroke and return tubular marine boiler that gave the Water Lily an average speed of 10 knots per hour.

Fitted with a comfortable ladies cabin in the fore part with all facilities for comfort and in the after part a smoking saloon for the gentlemen, the steamer had an English Board of Trade certificate for 260 passengers.
