Overview

Sepia prints. (a) Studio portrait of Edwin Nicholson in bowler hat, dark jacket and trousers waistcoat with shawl collar and watch chain, stiff collared shirt and bow tie. He has a full moustache and is posed casually with one arm on the back of a chair and the other hand in his pocket. There is a painted backdrop behind him and a Monstera deliciosa leaf on the left. (b) Head and shoulders portrait of a slightly younger Edwin Nicholson. He has thick wavy hair and a luxuriant moustache curling at the ends. He is wearing a checked tweed jacket and waistcoat, stiff collared white shirt and dark tie with pin.

Historical information

Son of Alfred Nicholson (a vet) who migrated to Victoria from Denmark in the 1850s. Edwin moved to WA in about 1895 and was the Secretary and Dispenser at the Fremantle Hospital. Opened Nicholson's Chemist on north west side of Bay View Terrace in 1904 (part of hotel complex). Married Nellie Robinson in Fremantle in 1900. The couple had three children: Doreen Eveline b.1901, Valentine Hammond Neils b. 1901 & Robert Keith b. 1905. Edwin died on 30.6.1906 aged 45.
