TOOL: EDGING KNIFE, ROUNDED EDGE, LIPFERT FAMILY

Subcollections
Overview

Slender curved steel shank with a channel or groove [chamfer] on its upper side, forming a fence on each side of a narrow chisel shaped cutting edge. The fences end in a curved edge. The shank is set into a copper collar and mounted on a medium brown bulbous wooden handle decorated with six horizontal striations. This is an edge trimming tool used for running along the edges of straps and other leather articles to take off or level the sharp edge. The shank has 'J. Dixon' and '2' stamped on it and its groove is narrower than those of 1991.173.1 and 1991.173.2 . From the Lipfert home at 270 York Street, Subiaco and presumed to have been used by Otto Lipfert, whose hobbies included leatherworking.
