Silver plated trident bread forks with decorative tops - Kangaroo
c. 1914Two of a set of three EPNS silver plated trident bread forks featuring Australian native fauna.
These forks have a circular voided top with a central image of a standing kangaroo facing left. The kangaroo is standing on a solid horizontal bar which has three sets of decorative diagonal lines. This bar sits on top of an inverted boomerang below which is a solid sphere and then a long thin shaft. The shaft continues to a point, either side of which is a curved tine of the same diameter, also ending in points.
The cast kangaroo is detailed, with fur texture visible. It is three dimensional from the front but has a flat back. One boomerang is engraved with the date '1914' while the other is plain.
The maker's mark, other hallmarks and the words 'Made in Australia' appear on the lower shaft in various arrangements on the front and back.
These forks were purchased with another featuring an emu. It is assumed they are of a similar vintage, and given that one has the date 1914 engraved on it, have been labelled as C. 1914. As well as the emu and kangaroo, similar patriotic forks were produced featuring other birds and animals.
