St. John Ambulance Brigade Geelong 'Ambulance Competitions' shield 1915
1915Heavy rosewood timber presentation shield associated with the St. John Ambulance Brigade in Geelong, Victoria.
It features a red enamel cross with silver edges at the centre top. Below this is a decorative silver scroll with the words 'Geelong Ambulance Competitions' above three central silver shields with engraved depictions of various first aid procedures. Further down is the engraved winner's plaque and at the very bottom a silver wreath of leaves and berries, tied in the middle with an ornate bow.
The first of the three silver shields shows two men in uniform holding hands from the side as they would if carrying a wounded man (hand seat method or two man carry). They are wearing caps, tunic, trousers, puttees and medical armbands, with the cross emblem visible.
The second shield shows a group of four uniformed men holding a stretcher on which a wounded man lies. The third shield features a uniformed man carrying another man over his shoulder (fireman's carry).
The winner's plaque is convex and has two turned scrolls on each of the four corners. It has the words 'Won by Fairfield Division St. John Ambulance Brigade 20.3.15' and has the maker's details impressed at the bottom.
The timber is polished and has attractive figure. The reverse of the shield is plain aside from 10 sets of metal screws or bolts with hexagonal nuts which attach the silver components to the timber. There are also two screws inserted on either side to which a hanger is made from knotted, plastic coated cord.
The final two images show articles from two local newspapers reporting on the Ambulance Competition held on the afternoon and evening of 20th March 1915 at Johnstone Park. Proceeds raised from the event were to support the Geelong City Band.
This shield was the major prize and was valued at 10 pounds and 10 shillings at the time. It was won by the Fairfield Division of the St. John Ambulance Brigade by 10 points.
"The competition consisted of stretcher drill, prepared stretchers, rendering first aid, collecting wounded. loading and unloading waggons, hand seat method of carrying patient, improvised stretcher and first aid work, obstacle race, carrying bucket of water on stretcher."
The trophy was presented by the Mayor of Geelong and then went on display at Mrs Henry's chemist shop in Station Street, Fairfield.
