POSTCARD, 'GREETINGS FROM SUBIACO, THE OVAL, SUBIACO, W. A.'

c. 1910
Overview

Blue and white postcard from the 'Greetings from Subiaco' series, featuring a photograph of Subiaco Oval. There are about twelve players on the grassed oval, all of which are wearing long white shorts and striped jumpers. A small grandstand overlooks the playing field, with an outdoor cinema screen nearby. A picket fence surrounds the oval and there are houses and trees in background.
On the reverse, in addition to a typical postcard format, 'Mr. Congdon 300' and '4.4.84' is written in pencil.

Historical information

Known as 'the sand patch' the area later known as Subiaco Oval was used for sport from the 1890s. The Subiaco Football Club's first home games were played here after the club was formed in 1896. After a brief move to Shenton Park, where they played their first WAFL games in 1901, the SFC returned in 1909 after the site was levelled and grassed. This remained their home ground until c. 2017.
The oval has been retained for use by the community as Bob Hawke Oval.
