WASHBOWL: EARTHENWARE BLUE AND GREEN GLAZE
Earthenware bowl for washstand, flared rim of arabesque design. Green and blue glazing to rim against white background. Manufacturer's mark on base "J and G Meakin/Hanley/England" probably indicates items of late 19th or early 20th century.
Book reference: Margaret Macdonald-Taylor (ed) 'A Dictionary of Marks' (Ebury, 1976, 3rd edition)), p.246.
In the 19th and early 20th centuries, J. & G. Meakin were important, large-scale producers of good quality, ironstone tableware (‘White Granite’ ware) that met a ready market in the United States, South America, Australia, and other traditional British markets and by the 1890s the company was one of the world’s largest earthenware manufacturers.
Bowl was donated by Mrs D. Aris and Miss Jean Doggett, daughters of Mr & Mrs E. Doggett, 45 Hopetoun Terrace, Shenton Park.
