Overview

Blue and white postcard from the 'Greetings from Subiaco' series, featuring the Whittakers Bros. site on Hay Street, Subiaco.

The foreground of the image is mostly taken up with a road junction where two dirt roads meet. There is also a sign post which states 'Speed Is.'. Two sets of tramlines run across the front of the scene, one finishes at a five gabled warehouse building with the words 'Whittaker Bros Timber and Hardware Merchants' written across the five gables. The building with the word 'Merchants' on it is slightly different to the others - it is more like a shop with a verandah.

On the left side of the image there are several trees with stacks of wood and some grassed area. There are more warehouse style buildings behind this with a tram in the distance.

On the right side next to the main building is a shop or smaller building with a street sign or lamp post in front. Behind the post is a thick tree and behind this is a building with a spire, most likely the Subiaco Hotel.

On the reverse of the card in large letters is printed 'Postcard' with a square area with the word 'Stamp' printed in it. There is a straight line with a curled line underneath it. Along the left edge, printed sideways, is 'Published by W. Cadman, Subiaco'.

Historical information

Whittaker's was a significant West Australian business and local employer that operated out of the Hay Street site until it was demolished in 1973.

William Cadman owned a newsagency and printing shop in the building 'Doyle Court' on the corner of Bagot and Rokeby Roads.
