Overview

Image: A portrait of a young man in an Australian World War II army uniform. He is wearing a slouch hat and a plain army green shirt, with the top button undone. The background is a collection of colours blending into each other.

Frame: The frame is a golden/brown with three black lines.

Labels: At bottom of frame is a plastic brass coloured plaque with black print reading 'STARCEVICH Leslie Thomas VC,/RANK Private, UNIT 2/43RD Battalion./24th Brigade, 9th Division/DATE 18 June 1945/PLACE Near Beaufort. British North Borneo (now Malaysia)". In the bottom right corner in red is a signature in oil painting.

Reverse: On the back is a blue label 284 mm (w) x 220mm (h). There is a double lined border. In the top left side is an image of a painter's palette with printing "AWARD WINNING QUALITY/MADE IN USA". Below this is SIZE 20" x 24"/50.8cm x 60.9cm, followed by TITLE Starcevich/ARTIST-------/MEDIUM oil. The words 'Starcevich' and 'oil' are in pencil. Down the right side is 'INNOVATION.QUALITY.STYLE/WOLSEYCanvas Panels/HIGH QUALITY CANVAS PANELS/ACRYLIC PRIMED/USE WITH ALL MEDIUMS". In the bottom right corner is a bar code.

Historical information

Leslie Starcevich was born in Subiaco on 5 September 1918. He enlisted in the AIF in 1941 joining the 2/43rd Battalion, 24th Brigade, 9th Division. It was during the 9th Division's campaign in British North Borneo, which began on 10 June 1945, that Starcevich was awarded the Victoria Cross.

Portrait previously hung in the old Subiaco Council Building, and was not rehung in the new Council Chambers.
