WWI paper fundraising pin - Paris Day, 14 July 1915
1915Oval shaped World War One paper fundraising pin featuring the flags of the Allies (Japan, Belgium, Great Britain, France, Imperial Russia, Italy, Serbia). These surround the Paris Coat of Arms (a sailing ship on a red background with a broad blue border above containing three fleurs-de-lis symbols and topped by a golden crown). A depiction of the Légion d’honneur (Legion of Honour ) medal is below the Coat of Arms. This all appears on a purple background with a gold border.
The reverse is gold with grey writing and reads 'Journée de la Ville de Paris, 14 Juillet 1915' which translates to Paris Day, 14 July 1915. The name of the publisher is written at the bottom of the reverse.
There is an area of discolouration at the top of the reverse where a red and blue ribbon would have been attached, through which a fastener would have been placed to secure the pin to the wearer.
Journée de Paris, also known as "Paris Day" or "Bastille Day" is celebrated annually on the 14th of July. The date commemorates both the storming of the Bastille on the 14th July 1789, which ended absolute rule, and the Festival of the Federation of the 14th July 1790.
During World War One, fundraising items such as this pin were sold for the benefit of the War Works of L'Hotel-de-Ville - for the combatants, the wounded, the convalescents, the disabled, the refugees and the prisoners.
