WWI era metal locket featuring the image of French General Joseph Joffre
1915French patriotic World War One Era medal slide locket commemorating Commander-in-Chief, General Joseph Jacques Césaire Joffre.
The front of the locket has a repoussé effigy of General Joffre wearing his military uniform and cap, beneath which is his name 'Joffre' and to either side the dates 1914 - 1915. There is a laurel wreath border on the left and an oak leaf brder on the right.
There is a circular loop attached to the top of the locket through which a metal ring is attached. A safety pin is threaded through the ring for attachment.
The locket slides apart to reveal an intact photo frame with a card base and metal border.
The back of the locket would have been originally plain. However, this has been engraved many decades later and was a gift from Annabelle to Crum in 1976. The words 'Johnny Star' have been scratched above the engraving.
This French military medal locket is believed to have been made in remembrance of the strategically decisive Forst Battle of the Marne in September 1914, where General Joffre regrouped the retreating allied armies to defeat the Germans.
It has been repurposed as a gift over 60 years later.
