WWI era French charity Flag Day fundraising pin for orphans
c. 1915World War One era fundraising flag pin sold to support the French children left orphaned by the war.
On the front is a central oval image of the seated figure of a woman facing right, two infant children protected by her arms, printed in red ink on a white background. Surrounding them is a wreath of blue leaves.
On the reverse, the same blue leaves appear around the edges, with the words 'Journée De L'orphelinat Des Armées' in a stylised font written in red on a white background.
A metal pin is threaded through the two pieces of card and extends well below the flag for attachment.
During World War One, fundraising items such as this flag pin were sold on the streets of France. Money was raised for a variety of causes including supporting the troops fighting on the various fronts, supporting the war effort, supporting wounded soldiers (or those having caught tuberculosis), soldier's widows, orphans, and thanking allied countries.
A number of prominent French artists and designers contributed designs which were turned into cardboard insignia, thin stamped medals, pin badges, or more rarely bronze or silver medals, often with a piece of red, white and blue ribbon attached to the top, representing the French flag.
