Hummock Hill Athletic Club fundraising pin - October 1917

1917
Overview

Circular tin-backed, celluloid badge produced to raise funds for the Australian Soldiers Repatriation Fund. Funds were to be raised by the holding of a Patriotic Sports Day on 10 October 1917 at the Hummock Hill Athletic Club.
The badge is in the colours of the Empire - red and white and blue - with a gold border. There is a central image in blue on a white background depicting a farmer ploughing a field with two horses in front of a building flying the Australian flag from the apex of the roof. Surrounding this is a blue circle with the words 'Hummock Hill Athletic Club' in white letters, and to the outside of this another circle in red with white lettering, reading 'Patriotic Sports 10th Oct, 1917 at the top and 'In aid of Aust. Soldiers Rep. Fund' at the bottom.
An Australian flag appears over the blue and red layers on the left and the flag of Imperial Russia (a black eagle on a gold background) is on the right, both enclosed within the shape of a shield.
The reverse has a white paper insert which has a central blue circle upon which the name and address of the maker are written in white text.
There is a metal pin which encircles the edge of the badge before ending in a point which can be pushed through clothing for attachment.

Historical information

South Australia was very active on the home front during wartime, having several fundraising charities unique to the state. These included the School's Patriotic Fund, Fighting Forces Comforts Fund and the Cheer Up Society,
It was common during wartime to provide prizes in the form of war bonds or to issue certificates in lieu of prize money. There are several such certificates in the collection. The winner receives acknowledgement, and the money that would have been spent on a trophy or award was instead put towards the war effort or a specific charity such as the Red Cross.
