WWI era photo découpage hand painted plaque by Mon. Clady - 1
1916Oval-shaped photo découpage hand painted timber plaque made by French artist, Monsieur Clady, in 1916.
It features a photographic image of the head and shoulders of a woman wearing a white top (either blouse or dress) with a thin collar. She has a necklace of beads or pearls around her neck. Her hair is light brown and parted slightly to the side. It is pulled back loosely into a bun. She is looking directly at the viewer and has a slight smile.
The photo has been pasted onto the thin slice of timber and then covered with varnish. The surrounds are painted with green foliage beneath the photo and pale blue sky and clouds above. There is some soiling and fading due to age.
The signature of the artist appears on the lower right hand side, under which there is a wavy line and the date, 1916, all in red painted text.
The reverse of the plaque shows the grain of the timber, which appears to be pine, being lightweight and having knots. There is a small metal ring held in place by a piece of dark pink ribbon at the top for hanging, and a white label with black writing giving details of the artist and address of the studio.
Monsieur Clady was a French artist who created wooden plaques during World War One. The plaques were made of pine and featured a collage of photographs set within a hand-painted surround. Some of the plaques depicted soldiers in uniform, women, and scenes like a farmyard with horses and a cart. They came in a variety of shapes, with most beiong either oval or square.
This plaque was one of a pair by Mon. Clady purchased together.
