1915 hand-painted Christmas card - Les Éparges, France
1915World War One era Christmas card featuring a greyscale photo of medical staff and patients in a military hospital, framed by hand-painted, decorative, snow-covered pine cones.
Underneath the photograph is a depiction of snow-capped buildings including a church with a pine forest in the background and more snow on the foreground. The text 'Noel 1915' (Christmas 1915) is written in black on the left and 'Les Éparges' on the right at the bottom of the card.
The card itself is green in colour and has a textured surface resembling fabric. The buildings are light brown in colour and there are areas of black and white providing the contrast.
The back of the card is blank.
During World War One, Les Éparges, a ridge in northeastern France, was the site of a series of fierce battles between the French and German armies.
This card is one of a pair. presumably made by the same person and featuring the same central photograph of medical staff with their patients.
However, the colours and themes are quite different, with this card having a calmer green background with village snow scenes and the other being dynamic with the card and subject matter representing flames and destruction.
