Love token made from Indian coin sent to Alice from Mesopotamia - 1918
1917Love token made from Indian one rupee coin sent to Alice from Mesopotamia in 1918.
The detail on one side of the coin has been erased and then impressed with lettering and decorative motifs.
These include a central crown, date and artillery gun with a border of palm leaves. Between this border and the outer scrolls and dots around the circumference are the words 'Mesopotamia' and 'Alice'.
The reverse of the coin is well worn but shows remnants of the crowned and robed bust of King George V facing left with legends 'George V King Emperor' around it.
Love tokens made from coins such as this were often sent by soldiers to loved ones at home as souvenirs.
Given the depiction of a field artillery gun, it it likely that the sender served with a Field Artillery unit such as the Royal Field Artillery, and was based in mesopotamia in 1918. His identity and that of Alice remain unknown.
