Mother of pearl hearts and arrow sweetheart brooch for 'Dear Mother'
c. 1940World War Two era, mother of pearl hearts and arrow trench art sweetheart brooch dedicated to 'Dear Mother'.
It comprises two overlapping hearts with decorative edges and a Cupid's arrow either side - the arrowhead at the right, and the tail to the left.
The word 'Dear' is scratched into the left heart on the diagonal and then filled with blue paint, whuile the right heart bears 'Mother'.
There are remnants of red paint on the arrow and the borders of the hearts.
The reverse has a metal pin clasp glued to it.
There are many items in the collection that have been made by or for service men and women whilst on active service. These are known by the collective term 'trench art' and include items made from locally available materials such as sea shells (to obtain the mother of pearl), tortoiseshell, coins, bullets, shell casings, Perspex and even toothbrush handles.
