Sweetheart brooch made from Australian Engineers collar badge with attached patriotic ribbon
c. 1915World War One era sweetheart brooch made from an Australian Engineers collar badge. It has a patriotic, red white and blue ribbon representing the Empire threaded through the pin on the reverse.
The brass badge is star-shaped, surmounted by a King's crown, with a grenade embossed on the raised circular centre. Around this is a painted red ring within which is 'Australian Engineers'. A scroll underneath the badge bears the motto 'Facimus et Francimus' (We make and we break).
There is a pin clasp on the reverse and no visible maker's mark.
Many military badges and insignia were converted into jewellery such as brooches, pendants, lockets and earrings to be gifted to loved ones as keepsakes.
