Sweetheart brooch made from Australian Engineers collar badge with attached patriotic ribbon

c. 1915
Overview

World War One era sweetheart brooch made from an Australian Engineers collar badge. It has a patriotic, red white and blue ribbon representing the Empire threaded through the pin on the reverse.
The brass badge is star-shaped, surmounted by a King's crown, with a grenade embossed on the raised circular centre. Around this is a painted red ring within which is 'Australian Engineers'. A scroll underneath the badge bears the motto 'Facimus et Francimus' (We make and we break).
There is a pin clasp on the reverse and no visible maker's mark.
