WWI era hand painted plaque featuring the French city of Amiens
c. 1915Oval-shaped, hand painted timber plaque made by an unknown French artist during the World War One period.
The painting depicts the Amiens Cathedral in the centre of the city buildings, with vegetation either side and the horizon and sky in the background.
The name 'Amiens' is painted in white cursive text in the foliage on the right hand side of the plaque.
The reverse of the plaque shows the grain of the timber, which appears to be pine. The outer layers are still present, including sections of the original bark, although some has broken away over time.
The word 'Amiens' and the number '137' have been written in pencil on the back of the plaque and there is a metal ring attachment for hanging. There is no artist's signature present.
While this painted timber plaque is different to the other three French WWI photo découpage items, it also has similarities in terms of the kind of wood used, the shape of the plaque, and the style of the painting.
It is not possible to attribute it to a particular artist.
