Overview

Special Clothing Ration Book from 1946.

Front cover is brown card with red printing and black pen handwriting. At the top left of the card the number [165] is written in black pen, as well as a stamp in black ink [DEPUTY DIRECTOR OF RATIONING WA].

Printed on the front cover is [200 COUPONS No W 527863] with the Commonwealth Coat of Arms in the middle. Following this is [Book Rg. D3 / Commonwealth of Australia / SPECIAL CLOTHING RATION BOOK / (1945-6) / PRE-NATAL ISSUE / Issued subject to Conditions set out on inside cover / Name Carmen D. Blomfield / Address Adminal Road, / Bedfordale / Civilian Identity / No. of Holder Wt/-/26850 / Date of / Issue 29/3/46 / If found, return to Deputy Director of Rationing for the State].

The inside front cover has printed conditions of use of the ration coupons. First two pages inside the booklet are sheets of 50 ration coupons each. The first of the pages has 15 coupons missing, cut off. The third page has printed special registration slips.

The back cover of the booklet is brown card, with the back cover containing personal pen entries.

Booklet is held by a metal staple on the left hand side.

Historical information

On 6 September 1946 Carmen and Ben Blomfield or Admiral Road Bedfordale would welcome their son Geoffrey Arthur Blomfield to the world. The family lived on a dairy that they ran for a number of years. This ration book allowed Carmen to purchase clothing and fabric to ensure Ben had clothes, nappies and linen ready for when he was born.

Rationing was introduced during World War II due to shortages caused by supplying the war effort and sending supplies to Europe. Though some items were restricted it was not until 1942, after Japan entered the war that the Federal Government introduced a national rationing system. Following the end of the war rationing was slowly reduced with tea being the last item removed from the rationing list in July 1950.
