1949 Tea Butter Ration Card.

Printed on front of paper is [Commonwealth of Australia / 1949 TEA and BUTTER / RATION CARD /W No 274085 / Name Bloomfield / Address Bedfordale / Via Armadale / Holder's name and address must be inserted / immediately upon receipt of card / If this Card is found it / must be returned at once / to the Deputy Director / of Rationing, Perth].

The bottom of the card has a torn out section where the coupons were located.

Printed vertically along the right edge of the card are the words [FOLD HERE].

The reverse of the card is blank.

Historical information

Benjamin 'Ben', Carmen and their son Geoffrey Blomfield all lived at a dairy farm on Admiral Road in Bedfordale during and after World War II. Between 1942 and 1950 many of the essential items they needed were rationed because of Australia's involvement in World War II. The Federal Government issues ration cards for a variety of goods to ensure people were allocated a 'fair share' and to prevent profiteering off items that were rationed.

Rationing was introduced during World War II due to shortages caused by supplying the war effort and sending supplies to Europe. Though some items were restricted it was not until 1942, after Japan entered the war that the Federal Government introduced a national rationing system. Following the end of the war rationing was slowly reduced with tea being the last item removed from the rationing list in July 1950.
