Overview

Rectangular black covered box, very badly worn,with two leather straps with buckles and a leather carrying handle on the front under which is a metal lock with no key. Inside are various compartments covered with a purple cord material to house the saxophone, mouthpiece and reeds. White unclear/faded text on the inside of the lined box lid.

Historical information

The saxophone was made by Hawke and Son of London and sold to someone from the town of Wagin by Nicholson & Sons of Perth. In the mid 1900s the saxophone was a popular instrument in many bands who played at dance halls or at community dances and balls. Dances and balls were a regular feature at the Kelmscott and Armadale halls in the early 1900s through to the early 1970s. Changing music styles in the 1960s to 1980s saw the popularity of community balls and dances drop off.
