Overview

Silver plated J shaped metal saxophone. Top end round, the J hook tapers out to a splayed opening. Along the shaft of the saxophone are various levers that lift valves to regulate air flow through the saxophone.

Historical information

The saxophone was made by Hawke and Son of London and sold to someone from the town of Wagin by Nicholson & Sons of Perth. In the mid 1900s the saxophone was a popular instrument in many bands who played at dance halls or at community dances and balls. Dances and balls were a regular feature at the Kelmscott and Armadale halls in the early 1900s through to the early 1970s. Changing music styles in the 1960s to 1980s saw the popularity of community balls and dances drop off.
