BAG, MONEY - BUTCHER

Overview

Brown leather bag with long strap handle, pocket on outside on one side and brass trim with hinged sides, catch with knob , rings and loop. Bag has snake skin pattern on front and back. Plain brown leather underneath and strap. Very worn leather. Inside is lined with plain, tan, soft leather. Torn inside. Strap has a buckle to adjust length and leather is very hard.

Historical information

The money bag was used Jock Jamieson and Bill Maitland who operated W & B Maitland Butchers shop in Byford from the 1920s to 1966. Maitland's was the first butcher shop in Byford and was located on the South Western Highway.

The shop was demolished in 1980 to make way for the Byford Tavern.

Byford was a part of the City of Armadale until 1977 when it became a part of the neighbouring Shire of Serpentine-Jarrahdale.

Statement of significance

This object is part of a collection that represents the commercial history of the City of Armadale. It represents the many different businesses that have operated in the local area and how those businesses have evolved over time. Businesses play an important role within a community, they provide wanted and needed goods and services, employment, income and opportunities to the local community. They can also operate as important social connectors, places where people gathered and engaged with other members of the community.
