Overview

Photographic postcard showing an object of a bell shape with a fish’s head and wooden handles on either side of the head. There is a description printed under the photograph. The background has yellowed with age and shows some foxing. On the back are the usual postcard markings.

Historical information

Part of an extensive collection of postcards received by Vera VERGE from her sweetheart Private Edward Charles MOUCHEMORE 6351 who served with the 28th Battalion during the First World War. They met in Albany while attending the same school. Edward was killed in action at Bullecourt, France on 3 October 1918 at the age of 22. The collection was kept by Vera throughout her life and donated to the Princess Royal Fortress by a family member in 2019.

Contextual information

This bronze hand bell, housed in the Cathedral of Saint-Pol, is reputed to have its origins dating back to the 6th Century. An object of great veneration it is claimed to cure deafness and headaches.
