Peter Anthony Gugeri (1845-1931) was born in London and lived in Italy from 1863-1865 where he travelled widely, gaining experience in the wine industry. He came to Western Australia in 1871, leased Houghton vineyard and soon saw the potential for viniculture in the Swan Valley and at Mundaring.
As well as being recognised as a winemaker, Gugeri became a leading wine and spirit merchant in the early Swan River colony.
Gugeri was first president of the Perth Yacht Club, member of the Perth Board of Education, Councillor for the Central Ward of the City of Perth, magistrate, clerk of courts and chairman of the Board of Health. He was a prominent Claremont citizen and influential in having the Claremont Railway Station erected in its present position.
