CLAREMONT RAIILWAY STATION AND ENVIRONS

Overview

Colour print of view from Shenton Road verge to the buildings facing Gugeri Street. A small boy and a group of four are on the verge of Shenton Road. Behind a cyclone fence are numerous parked cars of mainly 1970s vintage. There is some evidence of wooden yards and ramp for loading animals and a red gravel surfaced platform linked to the southern and northern platforms by a green wooden bridge. In the background, facing Gugeri Street are a white industrial building [CLAYS SERVICE CENTRE], the cream two storey Green's Buildings, roof and chimneys iof the obscured Station Master's House and the white upper storey and red roof of the Claremont Hotel.

Historical information

The gravel surfaced platform was used for Royal Show patrons prior to the development of a special station near the Ashton Ave bridge and eventually direct access to the showgrounds. Passengers used the green bridge depicted to access Shenton Rd near the corner of Davies Rd. During WWII, this separate platform was used for troop trains.
