Unfortunately we do not know whether this Tipping Vat was actually used in this Butter Factory but we do know it was used in a Butter Factory here in the south west

Details
When the full cream cans arrived at the Butter Factory factory workers would weigh the full cream cans on the loading ramp and take a sample of cream to test for the fat content. These details were needed to confirm the payment to be made to the farmer and were recorded on a slip of paper one inch wide and ten inches long. There was one slip of paper for each farmer which detailed number of cans, weight of cream and the results of the butter fat test. The factory workers would then manually empty the cream from the cream cans into the Tipping Vat where the cream would remain until it was moved into the Holding Vat.
Once the Cream Cans had been sterilized and ready for return to the farmer the slip of paper was put into the main cream can for the farmer.
